Anybody who is new to skiing or snowboarding may feel a mix of excitement and trepidation at the prospect of their first holiday in a ski resort such as Chamonix or Les Gets. Apart from choosing the right catered chalets they will also have to think about the gear that they should take. This overview of winter sports clothing and accessories should come in particularly handy.
Equipment to Rent and Buy
After deciding upon which of the luxurious catered chalets to stay at, you may be tempted to purchase a raft of brand new clothes and accessories online. However, unless you see any special offers then it may be best to wait until you arrive before making a purchase. You'll discover that there are a number of shops that sell second hand and end of season stock for reasonable prices in most of the major resorts. There is also the option of hiring the equipment that you will be using. This is an excellent way of saving money for anybody who takes skiing holidays fairly infrequently.
The Importance of Layers
The wonderful catered chalets that you are staying in will no doubt be warm and cosy, however, after setting first foot on to the snowy slopes it is fairly likely that you'll begin to feel the cold. You might well encounter temperatures of below 20 degrees farenheit and winds that cut through the toughest clothing. It's for this reason that you should wear enough layers that you can be sure of staying relatively warm. It's advisable to wear inner wicking layers that pull sweat away from the body and allow a fair degree of breathability.
The Outer Layer
Although your trusty winter coat may have kept the weather at bay during long, cold days in England, it will probably not do the job on the pistes. You should ideally look for a ski jacket that features special insulating materials and enough pockets for the storage of maps, wallets and goggles. It is also worth buying or renting a couple of pairs of salopets. They are available from most ski-wear retailers and are generally fairly affordable.
Protection for Your Hands and Feet
One of the main complaints that people make when on skiing holidays is that their hands and feet are freezing cold. On particularly chilly days you might even struggle to keep a grip of your ski poles and feel the tips of your toes. If you're to resist the temptation of returning to your snug catered chalets it will be necessary to purchase some good quality ski socks and gloves. You may also look to invest in a pair of shoes that are purpose made for alpine conditions.
