Some guys might look clean-cut today, but will be growing out their facial hair for the rest of the month. How come? Movember.
It?s a charity effort to raise awareness of cancers that adversely affect men, particularly prostate and testicular cancer, in addition to raising money to fund cancer research. The international organization also supports male mental health, particularly in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

?Mo Bros,? as they?re known, start November clean shaven, but then grow out mustaches for the rest of the month. They?re also encouraged to seek sponsorships for their efforts, raising money to donate to the organization behind it all. Women (or, of course, ?Mo Sistas?) are encouraged to support their ?Bros? and make donations as well.
In 2011, over 854,000 people registered online, raising $126 million that year. Since its inception in 2003, participants?have raised $299 million.
?Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men?s health,? according to the Movember website.
Funds raised through Movember go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the Livestrong Foundation (recently in the news due to founder Lance Armstrong stepping down amidst controversy) and other programs run by the Movember Foundation.
There were several events scheduled to kick off Movember in the L.A. area. Men were set to be publicly shaved at the Art of Shaving in Beverly Hills on Thursday to start growing out a mustache for the rest of the month. DJ Manimal is holding free benefit performance every Thursday all month at the Spare Room on Hollywood Boulevard to raise money for Movember.
Gala parties are scheduled to close Movember at the end of the month, including one in L.A. at Avalon ? a day early ? on Thursday, Nov. 29.
Kick off your Movember with famed mustachioed gentlemen Nick Offerman, aka Ron Swanson of ?Parks & Recreation? offering his thoughts on mustaches.
