Google+ Surpasses Twitter to Become Second Largest Social Network

Last week, Global Web Index released its December 2012 study of Active Social Platform Usage. ?As expected Facebook remains on top with over 50% of global internet users actively engaged on Facebook each month. ?The jaw-dropper of the report is that the Google Plus (G+) network has surpassed Twitter in number of active monthly users. ?In the month of December 2012 G+ grew to?343 million users globally, or about 25% of global internet users. ?Twitter came in 4th to YouTube with just over 20%.

?

According to Sam Fiorella, writing for the Huffington Post, to continue ignoring G+ as a marketing option is a risk few businesses can afford to take:

Google, through its various Web properties and deep integration with web- and social-based apps, is creating an interconnected database of users, content and relationships. This convergence of people, data and context is being referred to as the Web?s trust-based network. Google search engine results will be reprioritized to more favorably rank content that has been +1?ed or shared using the Google share/like widget or created and/or shared by people in one of your Google+ circles. Of course, this presentation filter only works when you are searching Google.com while logged in to Google, but let?s face it, with the growing number of applications and Web properties they control, the number of people permanently logged in is increasing exponentially every month. The goal of a search engine is to provide the most relevant information based on search queries and it now considers your social relationships a highly relevant factor in determining just what information is relevant to you.

While it?s becoming increasingly important to pay attention to the search and social marketing opportunities offered by Google+, Twitter is not to be discounted. ?Even though, G+ numbers topped those of Twitter?s in December, GWI also noted that Twitter is currently growing globally at a faster rate than any other social network. ??GWI.8, the Q4 2012 dataset from GlobalWebIndex, shows that the number of active Twitter users grew 40% from Q2 2012 to Q4 2012. This is equal to 288 million monthly active users (claimed to have used or contribute to Twitter in the past month) across the 31 markets currently researched by GWI (representing nearly 90% of the global internet population aged 16 to 65). That marks a whopping growth rate in active users of 714% since July 2009.?

Science cafes offer a sip of learning

ORLANDO, Florida | Wed Jan 30, 2013 10:35am EST

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Americans may be turning away from the hard sciences at universities, but they are increasingly showing up at "science cafes" in local bars and restaurants to listen to scientific talks over a drink or a meal.

Want a beer with that biology? Or perhaps a burger with the works to complement the theory of everything?

Science cafes have sprouted in almost every state including a tapas restaurant near downtown Orlando where Sean Walsh, 27, a graphic designer, describes himself and his friends as some of the laymen in the crowd.

"We just want to learn and whatever we take in, we take in. But we're also socializing and having a nice time," said Walsh, who a drank beer, ate Tater Tots and learned a little about asteroids and radiation at two recent events.

Others in the crowd come with scientific credentials to hear particular scientists lecture on a narrowly focused field of interest.

But the typical participant brings at least some college-level education or at least a lively curiosity, said Edward Haddad, executive director of the Florida Academy of Sciences, which helped start up Orlando's original cafe and organizes the events.

"You're going to engage the (National Public Radio) crowd very easily here," said Linda Walters, a marine conservation biologist from the University of Central Florida who has lectured twice at the Orlando-area science cafes.

Haddad said the current national push to increase the number of U.S. graduates in science, technology, engineering and math, or the STEM fields, is driving up the number of science cafes.

In Orlando, an Orange County STEM Council consisting of business, government and educational leaders recently asked Haddad to help two interested parties launch new science cafes in the downtown library and in a large new town development.

The U.S. science cafe movement grew out of Cafe Scientifique in the United Kingdom. The first Cafe Scientifique popped up in Leeds in 1998 as a regularly scheduled event where all interested parties could participate in informal forums about the latest in science and technology.

Traditionally held in pubs and restaurants, the Cafe Scientifique would start as a short lecture, followed by a short break to re-fill glasses, and then an open discussion, according to the organization's website.

The American movement of independent cafes is loosely organized at the sciencecafe.org website created by public broadcaster WGBH's NOVA science program. Haddad said NOVA several years ago provided a few hundred dollars of seed money to groups around the country that wanted to start a cafe.

However, anyone with a venue, a speaker and a marketing plan can start one. On the sciencecafe.org website, an interactive map shows the location of cafes across the United States and around the globe from Islamabad, Pakistan, to Antwerp, Belgium, to the Hawaiian islands.

Some cafes have cropped up in bookstores, theaters and high school campuses.

In Viera, Florida, about 60 mostly retirees regularly pack a pizzeria to hear speakers from the well-regarded Brevard Zoo or NASA's nearby Kennedy Space Center. In Daytona Beach, scientists from the internationally known Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University draw standing-room-only crowds at a local coffee shop.

Haddad said his hope for the cafes is to engage the public and generate excitement about the STEM fields that might filter down to the next generation.

"My feeling is STEM begins at home, with students who are being brought up by parents or relatives who have some interest in science and may encourage them to do that," Haddad said.

Attending a cafe does not guarantee a speaker as engaging as the popular host of television programs Bill Nye the Science Guy, as Walsh learned when he got lost in the extensive jargon of one lecture.

"I don't know that every scientist is gifted with the ability to work a crowd as well as deliver a lecture on targeted radiation therapy for tumors," said Walsh. "If you can find one that hits both those things, they should have their own television show."

Here's Two Words You Shouldn't Use on Your Online Dating Profile

prozac-dogIn reviewing some of the profiles through various dating sites, I found some interesting profiles. I have not altered a thing about these statements and think that words crazy or Prozac ?should not appear in your profile. The reason I say this is because you are going to attract what you don?t want.

I have ranked the profile statements based on what I think about them.

Ok, so here?s a tip on what not to include in your online dating profile.? Here?s the prime reason, you shouldn?t use crazy in your profile EVER:

I speak fluent?Crazy.1

I am the only heterosexual male that cried during the movie ?likecrazy !1

You?re probably sick of perusing profiles in which people sound really awesome, and then you find out they?re?crazy?and fucked up, selfish, domineering, paranoid, whatever. Just?crazy.3

  1. Cute, but probably not what you want to portray.
  2. People may think this is an accurate portrayal of you.
  3. Yeah this is effective! Offending people always works.

Or Prozac! These really need no ranking. Save psychiatric medications discussion for the 3rd date.

Fossilized conduits suggest water flowed beneath Martian surface

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Ridges in impact craters on Mars appear to be fossils of cracks in the Martian surface, formed by minerals deposited by flowing water. Water flowing beneath the surface suggests life may once have been possible on Mars.

Networks of narrow ridges found in impact craters on Mars appear to be the fossilized remnants of underground cracks through which water once flowed, according to a new analysis by researchers from Brown University.

The study, in press in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, bolsters the idea that the subsurface environment on Mars once had an active hydrology and could be a good place to search for evidence of past life. The research was conducted by Lee Saper, a recent Brown graduate, with Jack Mustard, professor of geological sciences.

The ridges, many of them hundreds of meters in length and a few meters wide, had been noted in previous research, but how they had formed was not known. Saper and Mustard thought they might once have been faults and fractures that formed underground when impact events rattled the planet's crust. Water, if present in the subsurface, would have circulated through the cracks, slowly filling them in with mineral deposits, which would have been harder than the surrounding rocks. As those surrounding rocks eroded away over millions of years, the seams of mineral-hardened material would remain in place, forming the ridges seen today.

To test their hypothesis, Saper and Mustard mapped over 4,000 ridges in two crater-pocked regions on Mars, Nili Fossae and Nilosyrtis. Using high-resolution images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the researchers noted the orientations of the ridges and composition of the surrounding rocks.

The orientation data is consistent with the idea that the ridges started out as fractures formed by impact events. A competing hypothesis suggests that these structures may have been sheets of volcanic magma intruding into the surrounding rock, but that doesn't appear to be the case. At Nili Fossae, the orientations are similar to the alignments of large faults related to a mega-scale impact. At Nilosyrtis, where the impact events were smaller in scale, the ridge orientations are associated with each of the small craters in which they were found. "This suggests that fracture formation resulted from the energy of localized impact events and are not associated with regional-scale volcanism," Saper said.

Importantly, Saper and Mustard also found that the ridges exist exclusively in areas where the surrounding rock is rich in iron-magnesium clay, a mineral considered to be a telltale sign that water had once been present in the rocks.

"The association with these hydrated materials suggests there was a water source available," Saper said. "That water would have flowed along the path of least resistance, which in this case would have been these fracture conduits."

As that water flowed, dissolved minerals would have been slowly deposited in the conduits, in much the same way mineral deposits can build up and eventually clog drain pipes. That mineralized material would have been more resistant to erosion than the surrounding rock. And indeed, Saper and Mustard found that these ridges were only found in areas that were heavily eroded, consistent with the notion that these are ancient structures revealed as the weaker surrounding rocks were slowly peeled away by wind.

Taken together, the results suggest the ancient Martian subsurface had flowing water and may have been a habitable environment.

"This gives us a point of observation to say there was enough fracturing and fluid flow in the crust to sustain at least a regionally viable subsurface hydrology," Saper said. "The overarching theme of NASA's planetary exploration has been to follow the water. So if in fact these fractures that turned into these ridges were flowing with hydrothermal fluid, they could have been a viable biosphere."

Saper hopes that the Curiosity rover, currently making its way across its Gale Crater landing site, might be able to shed more light on these types of structures.

"In the site at Gale Crater, there are thought to be mineralized fractures that the rover will go up and touch," Saper said. "These are very small and may not be exactly the same kind of feature we studied, but we'll have the opportunity to crush them up and do chemical analysis on them. That could either bolster our hypothesis or tell us we need to explore other possibilities."

The research was supported by a grant from NASA's Rhode Island Space Grant Consortium and through a NASA subcontract with the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins University.

Want to hop the pond? Europe ?still reasonably priced?

10 hrs.

There's good news for budget-conscious travelers who want to hop the pond to Europe: Two new rankings show many top destinations are downright affordable.

"Most of Europe is still reasonably priced for Americans," with costs in many cities similar to those in North America, said Roger Wade, who researched and compiled two recently released lists that rate 47 major European cities based on affordability.

Bucharest (Romania), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Krakow (Poland) are the cheapest major tourist cities on the European Backpacker Index for 2013, while Zurich (Switzerland), Oslo (Norway) and Venice (Italy) ranked as the most expensive.?

Sofia, Bucharest and Budapest (Hungary) are the most affordable destinations on the Europe 3-Star Traveler Index for 2013, and Zurich, Paris and Venice are costliest.

?In places like Krakow, Budapest, and Prague, it's still very easy to get a meal for $5 and a beer for under $2 -- in very pleasant surroundings,? said Wade, founder of Price of Travel, a website that helps travelers compare expenses in major cities around the world.

Europe's cheapest cities cost about a quarter as much as its most expensive, the indices show.?

The Daily Backpacker Index daily rate for Bucharest is currently $23.38 a day; for Zurich, it?s $119.78 a day.

Sofia is the least expensive city on the 3-Star Traveler Index, due to well-located and well-reviewed hotels that can frequently be found for about $40 per night. A similar 3-star hotel room in Zurich starts at around $155 per night in shoulder season, Wade said. Prices crept up very little overall for food, attractions and transportation, he added.?

Rates for hostels and hotels in some European cities have been declining, data show.

Hostels have come down in Bucharest, Krakow, Zagreb (Croatia), Barcelona (Spain) and even Rome, Wade said. ?It seems like more new hostels continue to open up (often converted from under-performing hotels), and hostel customers tend to be more price sensitive so the expensive places just don't fill up.?

Deals for 3-star hotels are good in St. Petersburg (Russia), Athens (Greece), Berlin and Barcelona, he said. ?The most dramatic difference by far is Moscow, which is 15th cheapest for backpackers, but 34th for 3-star hotels. The city has some good and cheap hostels, and things like public transportation and food are quite cheap if you follow the locals," Wade said. "But international-standard hotels in Moscow are notoriously expensive so it's in a whole different price category for those seeking comfort and English-language menus.??

The Backpacker Index is based on the price of a hostel bed (one night in a good location with good reviews), two public transportation rides, three budget meals, one cultural attraction and three inexpensive beers (or wine) for each day in each city. ?

The 3-Star Index uses a centrally located and well-rated 3-star hotel room, taxi rides and a higher allowance for food prices.

These types of resources "appeal because they intrigue us and speak to the armchair traveler in us all, said Jonathon Day, an assistant professor at Purdue University?s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

But they also are practical for planning, to help people organize and sort through an overwhelming amount of information.

It is ?really hard to compare prices of complex things like a visit to a city,? Day said. And by offering new options beyond the iconic locations, which are often expensive, it encourages experimentation. ?Lists like these place destinations that aren't 'top of mind' in front of potential travelers,? he said. ?This is good news for destinations competing for attention ... and ultimately visitors.?

The dollar is at a 13-month low versus the euro, said Neil S. Martin, editor of the Trans-Atlantic newsletter, which reports twice a month on the U.S. market for travel to Europe. ?But that doesn't seem to dissuade very many Americans? from traveling to Europe. U.S. visits to Europe were up 3.9 percent to 11.2 million last year, ? according to the Commerce Department -- probably the best year since 2007, he said.

European countries going through tough economic times -- Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ireland -- are all very pro-tourist and welcoming, he said. The best deals are likely in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, "where local currencies have probably dropped versus the dollar."?

But saving money may not be the only benefit of budget travel. ?Rick Steves is famous for saying that the more money you spend, the larger the barrier you create between you and the local people, and I totally agree with that,? said Wade. ?If you have lunch in a cafe on the main town square you'll probably be surrounded by business travelers and other tourists, but if you walk a few blocks in any direction you can probably find the same meal (or better) for half the price and you might be the only foreigner in the place.??

Pakistan will Participate in the Global Robotics Challenge in India

RoboticsThis year for the first time, Pakistan will be taking part in the Global Robotics Challenge (GRC) competition that will be held from March 14-17 at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, India. Other countries, including Bangladesh, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, UAE, Egypt, UK and Japan will also be taking part at this international event. The Air University in Rawalpindi will organise a robotics competition between various universities across Pakistan on February 6 in its Islamabad campus.

Through this national robotics competition, the winning team will get the opportunity of representing Pakistan in the grand finale. The event has been arranged by Air University?s assistant professor, Liaquat Ali Khan and will be also leading the team at the final event in India. All Pakistani universities offering degree programmes in engineering and computer science have been invited to participate at the national competition.

It is expected that at least 10 different universities will compete to make it to the final representing Pakistan. There will be two categories in the national robotics competition where competitiveness of the participants will be judged, one is of International Autonomous Robotics Competition and the other is International Robot Talent.

Robotics deals with designing, construction, operation and application of various types of robots that serve different purposes. The computer systems to control them, sensory feedback and information processing makes it all the more difficult and interest for creative enthusiasts. With the advancement in robotics, many places where humans used to work have now been taken over by robots making it cost-effective and quick. However, there are many tasks where a super-human ability like that of a robot is required and that is where it serves the best.

Facebook's Class Action Lawsuit

Zuckerburg & Co. owe you $10 dollars!

Social media wannabes heard that right but just a sec, read the fine print please! It may seem like a joke or a dud publicity stunt. The reality is that it just isn't.

What's ensued is that Facebook has finally decided to settle the long pending class action lawsuit against it since 2011. If you or your acquaintances just received a mail from the Facebook support alighting you with a e-mail notice about a pending settlement, we say you are one of the lucky "$10" blokes!

Jokes apart, this settlement delves into the same old problem afflicting the web users nowadays- DATA PRIVACY.

A Seattle-based seamstress Angel Fraley spearheaded the class action lawsuit against Facebook following the misuse of private data such as names and user likenesses in Facebook's Sponsered Story Ads. The long overdue settlement has come in the wake of a supposed compromise with the Facebook team. However the Court will pass its final verdict in its June 28th, 2013 Fairness Hearing in San Francisco. Till then the virtual pointers of the temporary agreement are being worked out.

Facebook issued a notice on January 2, 2013 defining the supposed "class" Of claimants entitled to a compensation.

The brokered deal is applicable for American users only whose information might have been misappropriated before December 2, 2012. Moreover the claim forms have to be filled out by May 2nd before the Court adjudicates.

"1. Provides a mechanism whereby users can discover if they are appearing in Sponsored Stories advertisements

2. Provides a mechanism whereby users can prevent the future appearance in advertisements by that advertiser

3. Changes the terms of use, known as the "Statement of Rights and Responsibilities", to inform users they can be used in Sponsored Stories
Gives parents control over whether their minor children appear in any advertisements at all

4. Gives minors the ability to completely opt-out of all advertisements while they are minors

5. Allows affected users to file a claim that may result in an award of $10"

The legal parties have set up a Fund worth $20 million and foregoing the legal costs involved, the leftover amount is to be used for settling the compensation dues. However things are not as simple as it appears.

What most industry analysts are pinning their aces on, is the fact that the lawsuit is a double-edged settlement in favor of Facebook Inc. The catch is that the "cy pres doctrine" may be brought into action here.

Accoring to this legal doctrine, when the purpose of a lawsuit becomes "impossible, impracticable or illegal to perform", the trust funds are reverted to charitable causes afloat.

In this case, the actual number of claimants still remains elusive. In case of an eventuality whereby the money left in the settlement pool is less than $4.99 per person, the doctrine can be brought into action. This gives Facebook a fair chance to save its face by diverting the funds to NGOs such as Centre For Democracy and Technology, Electronic Frontier Foundation, MacArthur Founadation, or any academic organization involved with social media education.

So basically the issue is not about the $10 one gets, rather the awkward imbalance between making the Internet an open source niche with adequate privacy measures so far as individual users are concerned. How the semblance of a mutually acceptable compromise will be reached is yet to be seen. But cases like these popping up time and again remind us of the swift measures that need to be taken.

We wish all our readers become prudent data users. You can share with us your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Decoding Microsoft Office: Which Office version does what?

Once upon a time, bright boxes of the latest Microsoft Office pleaded for your attention in big box stores. Now, as with music albums and best-selling books, Office is going the way of the download. With the debut of the new Office on Tuesday, Microsoft is pushing Office as a subscription service rather than as a physical product plucked from a shelf.

What this means is that there are even more versions and sub-versions of Office to choose from. Read on to cut through the cluttered branding so you can understand what each product is and does.

The new Office

The "new Office" is how Microsoft describes this year's release of a raft of products. The new Office encompasses Office 365, Office 2013, and more - bridging the gap between the software on your hard drive and your services and data in the cloud. Rather than leaving you dependent on Office software and docs that are tied to your PC and hard drive, Microsoft ?aims for you to have Office wherever you need it: at work, at home, on your PC, on your phone, and on your tablet, whether you're online or offline. To get this experience, you sign in with your Microsoft identity, which follows you wherever you use Office.

Office 2013

What you probably used to think of as Microsoft Office is now just the desktop software component - think Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and friends?-?of the new Office. Buy Office 2013 in a box, and all you'll get is a printed product key (only developing countries will get a disc in that box).?You can either purchase Office 2013 local software alone or get it bundled along with an Office 365 subscription. Here's?PCWorld's detailed review of Office 2013. If Office 2013 is all you want, you can get it three ways:

  • Office Home & Student for $140 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote)
  • Office Home & Business for $220 (adds Outlook)
  • Office Professional for $400 (adds Publisher and Access)

Alternatively, you can get the applications with one of several Office 365 subscriptions, below. If you're one of the few people who work off the grid, Office 2013 is best for you. But for the majority of users - those who can't work without Internet access - Office 365 offers more practical options, and its options tend to be a better deal.

Office 365

Office 365 is the umbrella brand covering both Office 2013 software and its related online tools. It's cloud-connected and always on, with updates released on a rolling basis. By default, you save your data to the cloud: Consumers share to the SkyDrive storage service, while businesses stash and share data via SharePoint. For Apple aficionados, Office 365 includes Office for Mac. Here's a guide to choosing the version of Office 365 that will best suit your needs:

Does your whole household use Office? This one's for you. Office 365 Home Premium costs $100 per year, with installs for five PCs or Macs in addition to mobile devices. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, and Access come with it, as doe 20GB of SkyDrive additional storage and an hour of monthly Skype calls.

Office 365 University includes all of the above but with two Office 2013 licenses per user. It comes at a steep discount for students, faculty, and staff: only $80 for four years.

Microsoft has not yet announced anything about?Office 365 for government?or nonprofits.

Office 365 Small Business Premium will be available "with new capabilities" on February 27, alongside the two following business packages.?The apps included are Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Access, Publisher, and Lync. It costs?$150 per person annually.

Office 365 ProPlus is the same as Small Business Premium, but expanded for 25 user accounts, with five installations per user, available February 27, pricing to be announced.

Office 365 Enterprise: It's basically ProPlus, plus Exchange Online, with archiving for company email, as well as SharePoint and Lync for collaboration. Also?available February 27, pricing to be announced.

Office for Mac

For those who haven't pledged allegiance to either Redmond or Cupertino exclusively, you'll get Office for Mac included with an Office 365 subscription.

Office RT

Microsoft's Surface RT tablets include 2013 RT flavors of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, optimized for touch gestures. Office RT generally offers more features than Office for Windows Phone 8 or Office Web Apps, but fewer than Office 2013 on a PC. Surface RT?initially shipped with a preview of Office Home & Student RT, with the final version available last October. Microsoft's beefier Surface Pro tablets, on the other hand, can run any iteration of the latest Office software you want to purchase.

Office for Windows Phone 8

All Windows 8 phones run mobile editions of Office software, updated in October 2012.?You get to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint through the mobile Office Hub. You'll also get the OneNote note-taking app. Office docs?render beautifully on Windows handsets, and they're easy to?open from or attach to email messages. Since documents are stored in SkyDrive, they'll display your latest changes and time stamp, whether you've last worked on them from a PC, a Windows phone, or a Windows 8 tablet.

Office Web Apps

These are pared-down versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote that run in a browser. Panned as weak in the past, they were updated last fall. They're not meant to serve as your primary document tool; rather, they're built to let you access and edit Office files on the go.

Office on Demand

Need to jump onto someone else's computer and work on an Office project? Maybe you need more functions than the Office Web Apps provide. Microsoft tailored Office on Demand for exactly this scenario. Through the magic of virtualization, it lets you run your personalized, full Office applications on PCs where they're already not installed. You just need to be on a Windows 7 or 8 computer, and have a subscription to Office 365. The programs include?Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, Visio, and Project. You log in to your Microsoft account at Office.com to get started; this video explains?more.

Office for iOS and Android

Remember when I said that Microsoft wants you to access Office from wherever you're working, including on your tablet and phone? Let's limit that to your Windows 8 phone and your Windows tablet, at least for now. Although Microsoft is proud of its OneNote app for iOS and Android, you won't get officially sanctioned Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on those platforms.?Rumors abound that that's likely to change soon, but Redmond's is staying mum on the subject for the time being. In November?the Verge predicted?that you'd find Office for the iPad in the wild early in 2013. We're still waiting.

In the meantime, startups have been offering tablet-friendly workarounds for several years, notably QuickOffice and Documents To Go. You can stream virtualized Office software on your iPad or Android device with the CloudOn app. These third-party apps let you save your work to Dropbox, Box, or Google Drive, bypassing SkyDrive and Microsoft's lineup altogether.

Office Store

Microsoft invites third-party developers to build apps on top of Office. The Office Store is where you can purchase these add-ons, which include such tools as a Brittanica reference guide, a LinkedIn social media hub, and a digital signature manager.

Office.com

This website is where you sign in to access everything Office-related. Here, you can access SkyDrive and jump to the Office Web Apps.

Singer Frank Ocean wants Chris Brown charged over brawl

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rising R&B artist Frank Ocean wants fellow singer Chris Brown prosecuted following a brawl over a parking space at a Los Angeles-area recording studio, authorities said on Monday.

Brown is serving five years probation for assaulting his on-and-off girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 and risks having his probation revoked should charges be filed.

In the incident on Sunday, sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a fight involving six men in West Hollywood. The deputies cited witnesses as saying that the Grammy-winning Brown, 23, punched Ocean during the brief altercation.

No charges have yet been filed, but Ocean "is desirous of prosecution in this incident," said Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Ocean, 25, who is nominated for best new artist and best record for "Thinkin Bout You" at the Grammys in February, said on Twitter on Sunday night that he "got jumped by Chris and a couple guys." He said this resulted in a cut finger.

A representative for Brown has yet to comment.

The "Look at me Now" singer has attempted to rebuild his career and public image since 2009, but his entourage and that of Canadian rapper Drake were involved in a June 2012 brawl in a New York nightclub. No arrests or charges were brought in that case.

Brown and Ocean are both nominated in the best urban contemporary album category at the Grammys, which take place on February 10 in Los Angeles.

Relationships: When Loyalty to a Deceased Spouse Keeps Your ...

In today's Sunday New York Times Modern Love section, there's an article by Eve Pell about her relationship with her husband (see link below). ?According to Ms. Pell, they?began when she was in her 70s and he was in his 80s. ?One of the things that she mentions is that when they were dating, her then-boyfriend was hesitant about making a commitment to their relationship because he still felt loyal to his deceased wife, who had died several years before.

Understanding the Emotional Dilemma For Someone Whose Spouse Died
Reading this article brought to mind how common this experience is. ?Rather than getting competitive with a deceased spouse, Ms. Pell, who sounds like a wise woman, understood her boyfriend's emotional dilemma and let him know.

Instead of feeling like his love for his deceased spouse meant more to him than his love for her, she spoke to him about it with a lot of empathy. ?She acknowledged that she understood, respected his feelings for his former spouse, and reframed the issue as there being enough room in his heart for both of them. ?According to Ms. Pell, her boyfriend appreciated this and, eventually, they got married.

Working Through the Loss of a Deceased Spouse
There are times when people haven't worked through the loss of a deceased spouse and it keeps them stuck. ?Each situation is different. ?But reading Ms. Pell's article reminded me of how conflicted a person can feel with a new love, especially when the former relationship ended because of a death.

People, who are widowed, who are still in love with their deceased spouse, often feel that it's an act of disloyalty to begin a relationship with someone new. ?Their spouse might be gone, but their feelings are still very much alive. ?They might feel confused and not know how to reconcile the fact that they can fall in love with someone new while still loving their former spouse. ?If the new love gets jealous and makes emotional demands too soon, it can create an even bigger conflict and ruin an otherwise good new relationship.

Reframing the Love and Loyalty Dilemma
Like Ms. Pell, it's often better to take an empathetic step back, try to understand your romantic partner's emotional dilemma and talk to him about it. ?When the dilemma is reframed as there being room for both the deceased spouse and the new partner, it can reduce a lot of tension and offer options that your partner might not have seen before. ?Your partner doesn't need to completely bury his feelings for his deceased spouse, which wouldn't be possible anyway. ?It's really not an either/or question. ?He can still honor the feelings he feels for her and make room for you.

For simplicity's sake and not wanting to continually say "he or she," I'm writing about this as the man having the deceased wife and the woman being the new love in his life. ?But, naturally, it could be the other way around too--with the woman who has a deceased husband and a new boyfriend.

Whether you're the person who is struggling with the loyalty dilemma or you're the new love, there are no rules as to how long the process takes. ?Every situation is different.

Some people, who have lost a spouse, never get over it, and they're unable to make a commitment to a new relationship. ?For other people, this issue works itself out with understanding on both sides. ?Sometimes, the person who is widowed needs help in individual therapy to work it out. ?Other times, it helps for both people to come into couples counseling to negotiate this problem.

Either way, I found Ms. Pell's approach to this common dilemma to be a mature and refreshing approach. ?Thank you, Ms. Pell, for a heart warming article.

'No budget, no pay' advances despite reservations

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In an earlier era, a move like the one engineered by House GOP leaders to pass a "no budget, no pay" measure probably would have been stopped in its tracks.

But with Congress' approval ratings in the gutter, House lawmakers pushed aside questions about fairness and constitutionality and tacked the idea onto an unpopular, must-pass bill to increase the government's borrowing cap.

The measure temporarily would withhold pay from any member of the House or Senate whose chamber doesn't pass a budget this year. The Senate is expected to approve it in the coming week, but only after leaders make clear they think "no budget, no pay" is rife with flaws.

The proposal is before the Senate because the House breezed past objections that the idea is unconstitutional because it could "vary" the pay of lawmakers in violation of the 27th Amendment to the Constitution. The House ignored concerns that the measure is unfair to members who are in the minority and are powerless to determine whether a budget passes.

Nearly unmentioned was the prospect that withholding lawmakers' pay favors wealthy members over those of more modest means and could, in theory, attract more affluent candidates better able to withstand having some of their $174,000 salary withheld.

"The last thing we want to do is to say to people running for Congress, 'If you're not a millionaire, don't run because there's no guarantee you'll be paid,'" said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.

For these reasons and more, the idea went nowhere in the last congressional session. But it was embraced about a week ago by House GOP leaders such as Speaker John Boehner of Ohio as they struggled to avoid a potential market-crippling default on government obligations.

The proposal is a slap at the Democratic-controlled Senate, which hasn't passed a budget since 2009. Republicans advanced the measure as a one-year experiment rather than a permanent law.

The logic behind "no budget, no pay" goes like this: Passing a budget is the core responsibility of Congress, so why should lawmakers get paid if they don't do their main job?

Why Switching to On line Fax Can Reduce Your Carbon Footprint ...

Pressures from environmental groups and also the media have highlighted the will need for companies to be far more environmentally friendly and some providers have taken profound methods to implement this. As an example some corporations have employed ?environmental teams? to enhance their organization processes and some have set emissions targets as a single of their important annual targets.

Even so not all businesses must visit such lengths, particularly smaller enterprises, as there are smaller and less complicated actions that can be produced to assist reduce a business?s carbon footprint. For instance turning electrical equipment off that is not being utilized and recycling where attainable are a few smaller things. But a thing that is definitely far more monumental is switching from working with a regular fax service to an internet fax.

Benefits of Web Fax

Energy Saving

You can find estimated to be over 23,000,000 organization fax machines inside the U.S. alone, a few of these sit idle in an office. Fax machines demand to be left on standby to receive incoming faxes, nonetheless when left on standby they continue to clock up substantial power costs for any enterprise.

Unlike classic fax machines which need an isolated phone line, net faxes are sent and received on-line and can be read from personal computer monitors and also other mobile devices. So when moving to World-wide-web fax, companies can unify their communications into a single point of access, as fax and e mail can each be sent and received from a single laptop or computer. This eliminates the require to have each a fax machine and laptop powered up in 1 instance, which can be not merely extra efficient, but is far more expense successful and much less damaging for the atmosphere.

Much less trees have to have to become cut down

Internet fax is pretty much paperless as users only need to print the faxes that they need to have a challenging copy of, whilst the typical U.S small business fax machine can consume as much as 5,000 sheets of paper per year, which equates to 13.eight million trees getting cut down each year to print faxes.

With such staggering figures environmental organizations are putting more pressure on organizations to cut back their carbon footprint and updating outdated communication processes just like manual fax machines is a good spot to begin.

CO2 emissions are decreased

A single business fax machine is routinely left on standby for a period of 24 hours, which indicates it omits an typical of 200 kg of CO2 every single day, which equates to 73 tonnes of CO2 emitted by every fax machine annually.

Through the course of action of carbon sequestration a wholesome tree absorbs about 13.5 kg of CO2 a year, but 13.8 million are getting cut down each year to source the paper for fax machines. This shows that fax machines are a part of a vicious cycle that is definitely hurting the surroundings.

Landfill

Landfill web sites are heaped with old discarded electronics and ink/toner cartridges, which may leak damaging poisons in the utilization of plastics.

A single toner cartridge emits around four.8 kg of CO2. This is not taking into the account the greenhouse gas emission in the toner ink which equals 3.two kg CO2 per cartridge. The quantity of ink cartridges dumped into landfill is expanding at an alarming rate, it can be estimated that by the end of 2012, 1.8 billion ink cartridges will likely be dumped into landfill.

It?s becoming increasingly significant for companies to cut back their carbon footprint and switching from conventional fax to online fax may help them do that, through a reduction in energy consumption, paper demand and dangerous greenhouse emissions.

Similarly by taking go here, corporations may also see economic rewards. By ?going green? businesses will come to be extra effective, decrease power consumption and improve productivity that can eventually reduce fees.

Design Tudakoz? ? Budapest Based Interior Design Consulting ...

Viktor_Csap_1_Designtudakozo

There is no day going by without me flipping through some magazines or blogs dedicated to architecture and interior design. I can spend hours looking at pictures of nicely appointed homes, apartments and living spaces ? sometimes just for the purpose of dreaming, sometimes for inspiration. Yes, I am an addict and I love it :). This is also the reason, why I am happy to introduce a young Hungarian architect and interior designer, Viktor Csap and his business, Design Tudakoz? (in English: Design Inquiries).

First time I came across Viktor?s portfolio, I was looking at his work executed in small flats. Having been confronted with small living spaces in big cities quite a few times in my life, I kind of wished he would have been around back then to help me with making those spaces look gorgeous and still functional. Today I am glad that this part of the market is developing and architects focus on smaller spaces, too, not only on big houses, villas and residences ? as I think it is a real challenge to make small spaces livable, cozy, appealing and practical at the same time.

Viktor graduated at VIA University in Denmark with BA in Architecture in 2008. After graduation he relocated back to Hungary and started working at the Budapest based Geppetto Design Studio. In 2012 Viktor founded Design Tudakoz? that offers a wide range of services to clients in and around the topic living & working spaces:?from neutral opinion on a project in completion, to few tips on renovating a room or an office, and of course also execution of more complex projects as well as architectural and interior design consultancy services to private & corporate clients. Design Tudakoz? consists of three experts, beside Viktor Csap founder, Panna Piros interior designer and Daniel Borl?i architectural consultant are at clients? services as well as other professionals and partners will be brought along depending on the nature of the project.

A proud father to a 7 months old girl, Viktor also loves winter sports and he would like to do a tour on the Russian tundra sometime later. During his visits in foreign towns and cities he likes the feeling of ?getting lost? and is interested in discovering hidden places that tourist guide books do not talk about. Beside his consultancy services, Viktor also owns an online shop Nooka Hungary, dedicated to sleek, designy accessories.

As I have already mentioned earlier, tastes and preferences vary and can be different, but when I first saw Viktor?s work, I liked his concepts instantly. In some cases the north European influence and inspiration is evident (which I am a huge fan of!), however in other cases his multifaceted taste and ideas come to light, too. I am more than curious to read about Viktor?s future projects. It is great to see young talents believing in themselves and taking the courage of building up their own businesses from scratch. Good luck to Viktor with his future endeavors.

For more information please have a look at Viktor?s portfolio on Behance,?or visit the Design Tudakozo website?and Facebook page?(both website and FB page only in Hungarian).

[Leaves] you drained and horrified.

Sometimes, the sun shines and the wind blows fresh and the very elements that make for intense hardship also open a window on intense joy.

Hoss is mesmerizing as a woman who holds it all together to the point of losing herself.

It's one terrific film, as smart, thoughtful and emotionally involving as just about anything that's out there.

It's a quiet film built of careful details.

"Barbara" re-visits the quiet, everyday tragedies of the Iron Curtain era, when paranoia ran deep and for very good reasons.

Feels like total immersion into the sights, stresses, and the subtle solidarity among middle-class professionals living in the workers' paradise that Petzold's parents fled.

[R]esides somewhere in an unsatisfying borderland between drama and thriller, never quite catching fire as either...

A superbly crafted low-boil drama that gets its hooks into you the old-fashioned way, through character, and highlights the difficulties and cost of living by principles.

Subtly intriguing and ambiguous, it's filled with suspicion and subterfuge.

Despite the limited scope of its predictable narrative, "Barbara" remains a compelling character study thanks to Nina Hoss's enigmatic performance in the title role.

Christian Petzold's latest thriller threatens to cross over the line from minimalism to nihilism.

Both insightful and poignant, but not mawkish...an intriguing character study set against the backdrop of a dark time in history.

The plotting, the planning and the deepening relationships don't make for kinetic action, but they are the foundation for a smart, engrossing film.

Hoss' acting is a marvel of subtlety; her body language is precisely calibrated to reveal a great deal about the character's inner feelings by the slightest changes of posture and facial expression.

...a slow building character study where looks and actions speak louder than words because of an oppressive political climate.

N.Y. Mayor Bloomberg giving another $350 million to Johns Hopkins

(Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is giving $350 million of his multibillion-dollar fortune to his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, in a gift that will bring his total lifetime donations to the institution to over $1 billion, the school said on Saturday.

Bloomberg's giving to the university over the years makes him its largest-ever philanthropic benefactor, the school said in a statement.

Of the new gift, $250 million will go toward the university's work to tackle global challenges such as the preservation of water resources, while the other $100 million will provide financial aid to undergraduate students, according to the school.

When he was an undergraduate at the Baltimore university, Bloomberg paid for his tuition by taking loans and working as a parking lot attendant. His first Johns Hopkins gift was $5 in 1965, a year after he received his bachelor's degree in engineering.

"Johns Hopkins University has been an important part of my life since I first set foot on campus more than five decades ago," Bloomberg said in a statement. "Each dollar I have given has been well-spent improving the institution and, just as importantly, making its education available to students who might otherwise not be able to afford it."

Bloomberg, now 70, went on to found financial news and information company Bloomberg LP and amassed a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine at $25 billion.

Bloomberg, who was elected mayor of New York in 2001, has said he will give away his fortune before he dies and has set up Bloomberg Philanthropies to distribute gifts. Besides education, his donations have targeted public health initiatives, the environment and the arts.

Bloomberg, chairman of the university's board of trustees from 1996 to 2002, has given the school a total of $1.118 billion, it said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Metta World Peace hit five 3-pointers on his way to scoring 17 points and the Los Angeles Lakers pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Utah Jazz 102-84 on Friday night, snapping a four-game skid.

Dwight Howard had 17 points and 13 rebounds, Steve Nash scored 15 and Pau Gasol added 15 points off the bench. Kobe Bryant had 14 points, a season-high 14 assists and nine rebounds to help the Lakers beat the Jazz for the first time in three meetings this season. Utah's four-game winning streak came to an end.

Howard aggravated his right shoulder in the second quarter of the Lakers' loss at Memphis on Wednesday, the same injury that caused him to miss three games two weeks ago. But he showed no ill effects from the start, scoring six points in a 15-4 spurt that opened the game and gave the Lakers the lead for good.

Derrick Favors led the Jazz with 14 points off the bench. Fellow reserve Gordon Hayward scored 13 and Al Jefferson had 12. Paul Millsap and Randy Foye added 10 points each. Utah had won six of its previous seven.

Utah cut its deficit to 78-69 early in the fourth before the Lakers began dominating the final 10 minutes. World Peace hit his fifth 3-pointer and Bryant scored four points during a 14-5 spurt that pushed Los Angeles' lead to 92-74. The Lakers were 9 of 21 from long range.

The Lakers had lost 10 of their last 12 and remain seven games below .500.

The Lakers led by 12 points early in the third before Utah closed to 61-58, capped by Favors' alley-oop dunk off a pass from Earl Watson. The Lakers fought back from 3-point range. Chris Duhon and World Peace combined for three 3-pointers and Jodie Meeks dunked to keep them ahead 72-63 going into the fourth. Gasol and Millsap got into it verbally and received double technicals as the quarter was ending.

Utah closed to 47-37 at halftime.

The Lakers' 15-4 run to start the game was helped by World Peace and Nash combining for three 3-pointers. The Jazz quickly closed within two before the Lakers stretched their lead to 26-19.

NOTES: World Peace was one 3-pointer shy of equaling his career high of six set on Feb. 28, 2009, against Chicago. ... Bryant's assists were three off his career high of 15 set on Feb. 12, 2002, against Washington. ... Utah fell to 9-16 on the road.
