WALKING for 18 hours straight might not be everyone's cup of tea, but breast cancer survivor Jody Lingard has got everyone from her family to the Cowboys in her Relay For Life cheer squad.
Ms Lingard plans to enter at least three teams and raise $10,000 in the Townsville event next month.
Her fundraising got a welcome boost yesterday when the North Queensland Cowboys hosted a charity morning tea where, for a donation, guests got to sample a dazzling array of purple goodies.
The mother-of-three has lost both breasts and had a double reconstruction. The risk of the cancer returning remains and so she makes sure to get regular check ups.
"It was a pretty difficult time so the Cancer Council helped me a lot with counselling and support," she said.
Cowboys game development officer and former player Aaron Payne was among those who joined in with the fun at the morning tea.
"Most people in their life will either get cancer or know someone who will so it's great we can be a part of this," he said.
The Townsville Relay For Life will be held from 2.30pm August 24 to 9am August 25. Teams are required to raise $1000 and can register up until the day before the event at www.relayforlife.org.au
A Purple Power Walk will be held on The Strand today, starting at the Rockpool at 3pm. Wear purple.
