President Barack Obama stands with families who benefited from the health care law provision that provides consumers with a refund if their insurance company doesn?t spend 80% of premiums on medical care.

WASHINGTON ? Heralding money-saving news from New York, President Obama defended his sweeping Obamacare health care reform with a defiantly simple message Thursday: The check is in the mail.

Obama went into campaign mode as he underscored the controversial new law?s consumer benefits, including the 8.5 million Americans who this week are receiving an average $100 rebate from health insurers as a result of Obamacare.

Those checks result from a rule requiring insurers to spend at least 80% of premiums on medical care, not administrative expenses. If they don?t, rebates go to consumers.

But New York is clearly on the White House?s mind with word that premiums may drop in the state by as much as 50% next year due to Obamacare-related changes. State regulators approved rates far lower than the admittedly higher-than-average ones New Yorkers now pay.
